Glasgow celebrates 235 years of volunteering

Over 235 years of volunteering were recognised at an event in Glasgow on 20 September 2018. The Civic Reception, hosted by the Lord Provost and Glasgow City Council, celebrated the contribution Panel and Area Support Team members in Glasgow make to the Children’s Hearings System.

Around 120 people attended the event which took place at Glasgow City Chambers. It was hosted by Bailie, Jacqueline McLaren, and the Minister for Children and Young People, Maree Todd MSP, was also in attendance.

Ms Todd, gave a speech that celebrated the dedication and commitment of Children’s Hearings Scotland's’ volunteer community. She said, “Panel Members, from a range of backgrounds, give up their time freely for the benefit of our children.  You put children and young people at the centre of everything you do and you make a difference within your local communities, for no reward beyond the value in the task itself.  You have my sincerest thanks, both personally and on behalf of the other Scottish Ministers.

“I have observed hearings first hand, and had the pleasure of meeting Area Support Team members from this city and from across Scotland at the Central Hotel here in Glasgow back in June.  I am just full of respect for the volunteering ethos, the sustained commitment and the incredible impact you make for those in our society who need you most.”

At the event, Ms McLaren presented awards to nineteen Panel and Area Support Team members. They were recognised for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 years’ service, alongside new recruits who have recently received their Professional Development Award.

Glasgow Area Convener Jennifer Phillips said, “Every year the Lord Provost and Glasgow City Council hold a Civic Reception for our volunteers in Glasgow. This year as with previous, we were delighted to recognise all of these amazing people who have been so committed to improving the lives of children and young people in Scotland. It’s not easy being a Panel or Area Support Team member but it’s hugely rewarding and that’s why we do it!”
