The Children's Panel - life changing

Framework for the participation of children and young people in the work of CHS Published 21 May 2015

CHS has published a participation framework which sets out our commitment to the meaningful involvement of children and young people in shaping our services.

The framework also reflects our statutory responsibilities in this respect and outlines the key areas where participation will take place.

This framework has been produced following consultation with over 50 children and young people aged between 11 and 25, who have all had experience of the Children’s Hearings System. To achieve this we worked with Who Cares? Scotland to carry out workshops where children and young people were asked for their thoughts and views on a number of different subjects including:

  • panel member recruitment
  • panel member training - behaviours and communicating in a hearing
  • priorities for our corporate plan
  • participation of children and young people in the work of CHS

The output of these workshops then informed the writing of this document.

The framework has been written with the intention that it could be understood by young people. A draft of the framework  was reviewed by care experienced young people, SCCYP and SCRA and their feedback was incorporated into the final draft.
