The Children's Panel - life changing

Depute Area Convener - Tayside

Voluntary
2-6 days per month (equivalent)

Support children and young people through supporting Panel Members – become a Depute Area Convener.

The children's hearings system is Scotland's unique care and justice system for infants, children and young people in need of care, protection and support.

Depute Area Conveners play a key role in this unique system by supporting an Area Convener  in the leadership of a local Area Support Team (AST). There are 22 ASTs which underpin the work of around 2,500 Panel Members throughout Scotland. The Depute Area Convener engages with the panel community, local authority services and other agencies to deliver the vision for the children's hearings system.

As a Depute Area Convener you will work to enable infants, children and young people to have the best possible experience and outcome in hearings within your area. You will also work to make volunteering with Children’s Hearings Scotland rewarding for everyone.

This will include: responsibility for leadership activities within the AST; attending and at times chairing AST meetings and sub-groups; enabling the views of young people to be listened to within the local hearing system; managing the local complaints process; coordinating and supporting the quality assurance work of the Panel Practice Advisors; working with local partner agencies and participating in joint meetings; communicating with Panel Members; supporting national improvements and changes to the hearing system at a local level.

You will be: enthusiastic and committed to securing the rights of children and young people and improving their outcomes and experiences; able to lead and be part of a team; a strong communicator, listening as well as talking. You should also be familiar with working with volunteers and be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to and understanding of the ethos of the children's hearings system.
